What is IST 171? |
All entering students must participate in an LSIC or Liberal Studies Introductory Colloquium . Faculty teaching LSIC 179 serve as academic advisors for their students. Students in IST 171 received credit for LSIC 179 over the summer. However, there were a few goals and objectives common to the LSIC 179 curriculum that could not be accomplished during a six week summer course. The IST 171 course will pick up where the summer LSIC 179 course left off. |
|
IST 171 Course Goals & Objectives:
|
I. All first semester freshmen meet with their academic advisor every week. This class makes that possible for students who finished their LSIC 179 course over the summer. We will also continue to work with the career center and other organizations on campus to explore possible majors, learn time management strategies, and make connections with various campus organizations
and activities.
In addition, we will work to make sure that all the students in this class understand the ILS requirements and know how to work within UNCA's academic structures.
II. This class is your official connection to certain activities in which all first semester freshmen participate. Example: Act in Asheville Day (Tuesday, Sept. 11) III. Many LSIC 179 classes participate in a service learning project. We did not have the time or energy for that over the summer, but we do have an opportunity to engage in a community service project this fall. IV. We hope to travel with at least one other LSIC 179 class to Atlanta to visit the King Center after fall break.

Service Learning: |
We will be working with Project March which is part of the Children First of Buncombe County Program. http://www.childrenfirstbc.org/ Every student will complete 10 hours of community service for Project March. There are a variety of service projects available within this organization ranging from tutoring to gardening. Project March coordinator, Stephanie Johnson, will come to class on Thursday, Aug. 30 to describe the mission and philosophy of her organization. She will also talk with us about the wide variety of ways we can volunteer for Project March. |
