The primary purpose of the video production unit of the Ramsey Library Classroom Instructional Technology and Support (CITS) Department is to independently produce and direct video programs for the faculty, administration, and students of the University of North Carolina Asheville, and for the Asheville Educational Television channel (AET), a non-profit educational cable television channel serving the city of Asheville and all of Buncombe County.
Additionally, the video production unit maintains and schedules a television studio and provides comprehensive post-production editing services.

AET is operated by a consortium of local educational institutions comprised of Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, and the University of North Carolina at Asheville. A ten-member Commission appointed by the Asheville City Council regulates AET. The channel is provided by the City Council and by the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners. Funding for operations is provided solely by the institutions and the County Commissioners.

The TV Studio currently functions in four capacities, as a news set, as an interview setting, as a blue screen facility, and houses two voice-over booths for UNCA faculty and student projects. The room measures 23.5' x 22.5' and is equipped with a 16 channel light grid. Lighting instruments include set lights, cyc lights, scoops, parcans, and fresnels - all rated at 500 watts. Some portable lighting is also available. The studio houses two cameras, a Sony DCX-D30 (studio configured with camera control unit) and a Panasonic AG-DP800 (studio configured). Both are connected to a Panasonic WJMX-70 video switcher in the adjacent control room. Programs are mastered in the DVCAM or Mini DV formats. Wireless lavaliere microphones and boom microphones are also available.

Post production services are provided for UNCA faculty and student class projects and administrative projects only. These services are free of charge. This is not a hands-on facility. Editing sessions are scheduled on a priority basis by the Video Production Manager (Kent Thompson 251-6425 or thompson@unca.edu) and performed by video production staff. Pre-edit planning meetings should be scheduled with the Video Production Manager.
