Perhaps the most spectacular of the seasonal rhythms are those for periodical cicadas. A number of broods have been identified and each year there is an emergence from one or more of the broods. This slide shows locations of some of the major broods.  Within a brood the cicadas emerge synchronously every 13 or 17 years. Periodical Cicada Website
