The daily calling activity of crickets is tied closely to the activity of females.
These figures show the correlation between male calling and female flight periods for mole
crickets, Scapteriscus borellii. The upper plot shows the average (bars=95%CI)
starting (red) and stopping (blue) times for 12 individuals. Males begin calling about 35
minutes after sunset and call for about 1 hour. Note the significant individual
differences in the starting times. The average starting time for female flight (white bar)
is also about 35 minutes after sunset. The green bars are the distribution of landing
times for flying mole crickets. The calling period of the males encompass the flight
periods of the females.
