This slide shows the tree cricket Oecanthus quadripunctatus and a short
example of its calling song. It is a trilling song where the pulses are produced
continuously, sometimes for hours. Each pulse represents the closing stroke of the wings
when the file and scraper on the wings are engaged. The silent intervals between the pulse
are during the opening stroke. Thus, the pulse period is the duration of a single
wingstroke. Tree crickets as a whole are extremely consistent in the rates at which they
produce their pulses, but the rates are temperature dependent (see slide5).
