Slide 1 of 29

Notes:

This slide show is a combination of two presentations (Forrest et al. 1998. Synchrony in crickets: models of coupled biological oscillators; Forrest 1998. Temporal rhythms in the signals of insects) given at the joint meeting of the International Congress on Acoustics and the Acoustical Society of America, Seattle Washington, June 1998.  This work is funded by a grant (#9627189) from the National Science Foundation.

This presentation is divided into four sections dealing with the rhythms of insect songs at different temporal levels. I begin at the shortest level, that dealing with sound production, and I move to higher levels (longer time scales) as the talk progresses, including insect chorusing, daily and seasonal rhythms. At each of level, I describe the temporal aspects of the songs. In addition, I will try to indicate the functional aspects of these rhythms; why these patterns provide some selective advantage to the animals that produce these rhythms.
