The goal of the Art Education licensure program at UNCA is to develop competent, reflective individuals who demonstrate exemplary personal and professional attributes as artists and as teachers. As an artist, each student will have a thorough understanding of and be able to effectively apply the basic elements and principles of art to produce works in a variety of 2- and 3-dimensional media, with demonstrated exceptional studio skills and practices through mastery in at least one specific medium. As a teacher, each individual will develop and implement developmentally appropriate art lessons considerate of the needs and abilities of students in a diverse society; including art studio, art history, art criticism, and aesthetics, in alignment with state and national art education standards.
The UNCA art education program results in a Standard Professional Level I license to teach art, K-12, in North Carolina. There are two components to this program:
1. Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Fine Arts (link to Art Dept) or its equivalent from another university, as approved by the Art Education adviser at UNCA); To include: art history, photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and ceramics; minimum 2.5 GPA.
2. Completion of the Education, Psychology, and Art Education Series outlined below, in accordance with the Policy and Procedures Manual and current UNCA catalog. Students wishing to be licensed as K-12 art teachers must meet regularly with both their fine art and education advisors.

ART 451: Creative Art Methods, K-12, (3). Prerequisite: formal admission to Teacher Education Program.
Education Series:
EDUC 210: Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century, K-12, (3). Prerequisites: minimum of 45 hours general education. Corequisite: EDUC 211.
EDUC 211: Instructional Technology for Education Settings, K-12, (1). Corequisite: EDUC 210.
EDUC 320: Middle School Methods and Materials, 6-19, (3). Prerequisites: EDUC 210, 2.5 GPA, or permission of instructor.
EDUC 380: Methods and Management in Teaching, 6-12, (4). Prerequisites: EDUC 314, formal admission to Teacher Education Program, or permission of instructor.
EDUC 455: Student Teaching and Seminar, K-12, (8). Prerequisites: Must have completed all Education, Psychology, and Art Education series; formal admission to the Teacher Education Program; admission to the student teaching semester (2.5 GPA in all UNCA courses, formal application and approval by the Education Committee). Corequisite: EDUC 456.
