MATH 280, Section 1: Foundations of Mathematics Fall 2009 Homework Assignments

Listed here (by date) is the homework assigned in our Foundations class. Make sure you keep an eye on this page, and keep yourself up to speed!
If you have any questions about these assignments, please don't hesitate to contact me.
- Monday, August 17th. Find some time outside of class to meet with your partners and read over this
handout, making note of the strengths and weaknesses of the various responses.
- Wednesday, August 19th. You will receive the first of fourteen class-guiding worksheets, Making a Statement, for which I will solicit volunteer leaders. This first worksheet concerns the structure of mathematical statements. Also, please take a half hour or so to download and install the LaTeX-related software appropriate to your type of computer. (See the main course page for the software links.)
- Friday, August 21st. You will receive the first set of homework problems, on statements and quantifiers, for which I will solicit committees on Monday. Here is a schedule for this homework:
- Preliminary solutions to two problems (Exercises 1 and 3) due to peer-review committee: Monday, August 24th
- Committee-led discussion: Wednesday, August 26th
- Homework set due: Friday, August 28th
- Monday, August 24th. Nothing new, other than making sure you have LaTeX downloaded and installed! We will use it on Wednesday.
- Wednesday, August 26th. You will have a new in-class worksheet to preview for Friday, on Compounding Statements, for which I will solicit discussion leaders.
- Friday, August 28th. Things are moving right along! First of all, we have a new handout, Basic Proof Techniques, for which we will need discussion leaders. You will also receive Homework 2, on compound statements. Here is a schedule for this homework:
- Preliminary solutions to two problems (Exercises 2 and 5) due to peer-review committee: Monday, August 31st
- Committee-led discussion: Wednesday, September 2nd
- Homework set due: Friday, September 4th
- Monday, August 31st. For the first time all semester...nothing new!

- Friday, September 4th. Nothing new! Yay!
- Monday, September 7th. Labor Day: no class! Therefore, no new homework, either. So sad.

Please note that I am requiring you to produce a solution to one of the problems using LaTeX! Also, by Monday, September 14th, please submit a LaTeXed paragraph to the Moodle forum on our textbook.

- Monday, September 14th. Those of you who did not submit a paragraph or more for the first chapter of the textbook should examine the work of those who did.
- Wednesday, September 16th. Nothing new: class was canceled on account of my illness.
- Friday, September 18th. Read through the handout that we will begin on Monday, The Basics of Sets. Also, you will receive Exam 1, first drafts of which are due on Friday, September 25th, with final drafts due on Friday, October 2nd.
- Monday, September 21st. Nothing new: keep working on your exam!
- Wednesday, September 23rd. Nothing new, again!

- Committee-led discussion: Monday, October 26th
- Homework set due: Friday, October 30th
- Monday, October 19th. Nothing new! I will soon have a list of topics for "Chapter 4" of our textbook, on which you will be asked to write.
- Wednesday, October 21st. Here is a list of topics for "Chapter 4," assigned to you all randomly as on this sheet. Your topic write-up, both .tex and .pdf documents, is due (to Moodle!) by Friday, October 30th.
- Friday, October 23rd. Nothing new! (I am out of town.)
- Monday, October 26th. Nothing new.
- Wednesday, October 28th. Nothing new!
- Friday, October 30th. All good things (and strings of homework-free classes) come to an end! You now have in your hands Exam 2, first drafts of which are due on Friday, November 6th, final drafts on Friday, November 13th.
- Monday, November 2nd. Your exams in hand, I will give you nothing new today. Nice guy, huh?
- Wednesday, November 4th. Nothing new, but I will soon use the marvy (not groovy) randomizer to decide who will write about which topics for "Chapter 5" of our textbook, on relations.
- Friday, November 6th. As promised, here is a list of topics for "Chapter 5," assigned to you all randomly as on this sheet. Your topic write-up, both .tex and .pdf documents, is due (to Moodle!) by Friday, November 13th.
- Monday, November 9th. Here is your homework on relations. And here is the schedule for this homework:
