Mathematical Links

The web is a wonderous thing placing tremendous amounts of information right at our fingertips. The sheer amount of information, much of it of low quality and dubious origin, introduces new concerns, though. It's important to develop a discriminating eye when looking for information.

The following links are generally good sources of mathematical information covering a range of topics and levels. A skeptical and inquiring mind should still be used, even when consulting the most reputable sources. Misinformation on the golden ratio, for example, continues to be disseminated through very well regarded sources. For example, this project from the geometry center alleges occurrences of the golden ratio which where debunked in a paper by George Markowsky which appeared in The College Mathematics Journal in 1992.

General Mathematical Links

  • The American Mathematical Society
Lots of information, primarily for research mathematicians. UNCA users may access the Mathematical Reviews through this page.
  • The Mathematical Association of America
Something like the AMS, but more general. Great source for news, columns, and book reviews.
  • Math history
A fabulous collection of information on the history of math from The University of St. Andrews.
  • Math archives
A collection of pointers to reasonably good web pages around the world.
  • Mathworld
An extensive dictionary of mathematical terms brought to you by the folks at Wolfram Research.
  • The Math Forum
Archives of years of discussion groups.
