Much of my research since 1991 has been with
Oromo-speaking Gabra, who are nomadic pastoralists in northern Kenya and southern
Ethiopia. This photograph shows a Gabra community that is about to move its
camp.
Last year I began research in Asheville,
N.C., to study the way children understand their community, and use places
in their neighborhoods to understand more abstract ideas such as race,
class, and identity.
