Information for Prospective GIFT Volunteers

Looking for a meaningful volunteer experience?

Consider involvement in Family GIFT (Getting Into Fitness Together), a 6-week physical activity program for families concerned about fitness or weight.  Supported in part by the Constella Foundation, the goal of the program is to help families develop a healthier lifestyle through increased participation in appealing and lively games and fitness activities.

The next Family GIFT program will begin in March, 2009.  Sessions will be held twice per week, for 60 minutes, in the late afternoons.  Families will engage in some activities together; they will also be divided into three groups (younger children, older children, and adults), in order to pursue age-appropriate physical activities.  Child care for children younger than 6 will be provided.

Volunteers experienced in leading fitness activities for adults (e.g., yoga, dance, water aerobics) would be greatly appreciated!  However, no special expertise is necessary, and we can use volunteers in a variety of roles: leading warm-up activities for all families, assisting with child care, or helping in the adult activity group by being an exercise "buddy."

Sounds great!  How do I get involved?

Send an email to Dr. Melissa Himelein (himelein@unca.edu).  Even if you'd like to assist just once, or just once per per week, we could still use your help!  We will contact you in the early spring once registration is complete.
