Frequently Asked Questions

1. Who can take this course?
Psychology 373 is open to juniors and seniors in either Psychology or Health and Wellness, or students in any major who have completed at least 6 hours in either discipline.  Students should have an interest in wellness generally, and in weight and exercise specifically.  As noted above, an important component of this class will be the family fitness program intervention, which will start approximately halfway through the semester, and involve participation in weekly athletic activities with children and their parents.  Students need no prior training in working with children, but should possess enthusiasm about the opportunity for gaining this experience.

2. What are benefits of taking this course?
Not only will you gain academic knowledge about diet and lifestyle, and their impact on wellness, but you will also have an opportunity to participate in a hands-on, helping experience as part of the class!  This practicum will help illustrate the ideas we explore, enhance your connections to the greater community, and provide you with resume-worthy applied experience.  And did I mention that you'll get to be outside, playing with children and their parents, during the crisp, sunny late afternoons of spring?

3. How do I sign up?!
Registration is by permission of instructor only, which means that you must meet with me regarding your interest so that I can give you a signed permission slip.  Registration for the Spring, 2009, offering of the class will take place during the Fall, 2008, semester.  If you know you're likely to be interested, it's never too early to let me know!  Feel free to email (himelein@unca.edu) or stop by (CH 204).  I look forward to meeting you.
