Internet Jazz Resources

The following links are some of the best web sites I have found to be useful for jazz musicians. If you have or know of a jazz related site you feel should be added, please contact me.

Casa Valdez Jazz
This is the jazz blog of saxophonist David Valdez. This terrific site is regularly updated and contains a wealth of valuable information ranging from practice ideas to advice on marketing live jazz to reviews of recordings and performances.

Charles McNeal's Web Site
You can listen to some MP3 files of Charles' terrific saxophone playing and download a huge number of solo transcriptions he has done here. He's also got a long list of links to other interesting jazz sites on the web.

The Red Hot Jazz Archive
While I'm not a fan of the color scheme (black background with white text is hard to read after a while), this site is a great resource for early jazz. It includes information on history, films featuring early jazz, essays, and many sound files.

International Association of Jazz Educators
This is the official web site for the International Association of Jazz Educators. Their site includes information about becoming a member, their annual conference, articles, and more.

Jazz Resource Center
An excellent resource for jazz theory, transcriptions, and CD reviews. Hosted by Christiaan "Niliov" van Hemert, Leon Kerkstra, and Willem Hijmans.

Jazz Improvisation
Professor Joan Wildman from the University of Wisconsin at Madison has put together this page of articles for her jazz improvisation class. It also includes links to other sites pertaining to jazz improvisation.

The Outside Shore - Jazz Education
This resource is a must for any jazz educator or student. Marc Sabatella has put together an easy to navigate site with some of the most extensive information on the web about jazz improvisation. His Jazz Improvisation Primer is used as a text for many college and university jazz improvisation courses, and is available here for free.

Jamey Aebersold Jazz, Inc.
The official home page for world renown jazz educator Jamey Aebersold. You can go to this site to receive a catalogue of his play-a-long series and other jazz materials, read articles on jazz, and participate in a public form on jazz.

PG Music
PG Music's application Band-in-Box is a very easy sequencer to learn that creates computer generated rhythm section tracks for practice purposes. Go to this site to learn more about it and other applications by PG Music.

Jazz Corner
This shockwave site isn't just fun to surf, the content is top notch as well. It includes links to sites of world-class jazz musicians, a public bulletin board, interviews, and more.

Vernon Jazzpage
Saxophonist James Vernon has put together a site which includes articles on jazz, etudes, transcriptions, and more on PDF files. A good resources for the jazz reed player or jazz musician in general.
