GREEK STUDY GUIDE: SPRING 2007
This is exactly what it states it to be..... A Study Guide. This means that changes can and most probably will happen to this schedule due to weather or other concerns.

It is the responsibility of the student to attend class and note the changes to this study guide.

Focus for this semester: Three areas: Sight translation, vocabulary expertise and principal parts (Yuk, Yuk, Yuk)
But one cannot translate if one does not have the information on how to find a verb form or where to look for a vocabulary word.

Student's responsibilities include:
1. Handing in homework each time it is required. The process of grading remains the same. The homework is not graded as such. It is a conversation between us so that I can find what problems you might be having.
However, a grade for the semester will be given for completing the homework on time.
2. When you have received a C- on the homework come to the next OH to discuss this. Remember that the grading on the homework is as follows (it is not a letter grade): C+ Well done, you understand the material. C You have adequate knowledge with only a few problems which I have noted. C- Too many points are missed which will cause you difficulty in the future. Come in to OH. X You do not understand the material at all and we will meet in OH and at additional times until you understand the issues. Always come to appointments.
3. BE ON TIME TO CLASS> It is very disturbing to me and to your peers to be late. It happens and I understand and I most probably will be late sometimes, but not consistently.
4. The minute you are in class, take out vocabulary cards and work on them. Waste no time, it is precious.
5. Please do not miss a test unless you have contacted me with the reason in advance or if something unexpected comes up. E-mail me ASAP.
6. Come into class with an enthusiastic attitude and participate frequently with questions and willingness to help one another.
7. We will be working in pairs on some assignments. Please consider this: To really learn something you must teach it. So we are all teachers in this class and you will be acting as such.
8. BE WILLING TO MAKE A FOOL OF YOURSELF SO THAT WE CAN HAVE FUN LEARNING GREEK.
9. Forgive yourself for making a mistake. It is human.

My responsibilities include:
1. Handing back the homework at the next class meeting. ( A caveat on this: Note that there will be a hand in folder for homework due and one for returned work. You need to pick it up, I will not hand it out) Always go through the folder with work completed and graded.
2. Handing back tests one week after completion. Make ups suffer as they are out of step.
3. BE ON TIME FOR CLASS.
4. Making material as clear as possible so that each point can be taught to one another.
5. Scheduling each class in a format that doesn't change from class meeting to class meeting:
Thus: Agenda is written on board. First 5 minutes for review of previous class meeting if appropriate. This only applies if new material has been presented. Statement of what assignment was for the day . Points of importance in the homework and assignments.
6. New material presented as before: Concept, form recognition, use and practice of new material.
7. Always being there for Office Hours.
8. BEING WILLING TO MAKE A FOOL OF MYSELF SO THAT WE CAN HAVE FUN LEARNING GREEK!!!!!
9. Forgive myself for making a mistake. It is human.

I would like to incorporate fun games into the class, such as word puzzles, reconstruction of broken stele and competitive vocabulary  matches. I am open to games which you can think of as well.

REMEMBER: GREEK IS FUN AND WE CAN MAKE IT FUN!!!! It is a detective story> we follow the clues; it is a secret code> only the initiated can read the message; it is a window into antiquity which provides insight into the human story which we may learn from if we can realize the great treasures stored there.

By the end of the semester my goal is to be able to read some ancient poetry, and something perhaps from Plato. It is doable. This is the prize that we are striving for. This is our Olympics.

Office Hours: Monday 2-4, Wednesday 2-4 and Friday 2-3. There will be a sign up sheet on the door. Sign in your name, time you expect to be in my office, class and problem you wish to discuss. I expect to see each one of you in my office frequently so that we can reach our goals.
