Journal Writing

    The goal of the journal use is to give you a place to reflect in writing on the content of the text in light of class activities including discussions and Place visits.  Your journals will be collected four times during the semester to assess your competency in making such connections.  Your journal will be marked with a check +, worth 10 points, or a check, worth 6 points, or a question mark worth 3 points.  It is possible to receive 40 points for thoughtful reflection in your journals. 

√+ :  Writing quotes the text, elaborates on concepts in text, and shows evidence of consideration of a new idea(s) raised by the reading.  Writing refers to an idea raised by a classmate.

√  :   Writing shows evidence of reiteration of concepts in the text.  Writing makes reference to class activity or discussion. Writing includes reflection on a new idea raised by the text or the class.

? :   Writing shows some evidence of having read the material but lacks any development of new thoughts raised by the reading or the class.

0 :  Writing shows no evidence of having done the reading, is unspecific and poorly developed.

Project Evaluation

   The goal of the projects is to show evidence of having applied critical and creative thought to an aspect of our course so that an original response, synthesizing your critical and creative insight is  presented to the class.  Successful projects will show aesthetic intent, clarity of point of view, and original insight.  You are encouraged to consider how your work might succeed in challenging or creating a new interpretation of reality.
