WxChallenge Information

WxChallenge

Each year, UNC Asheville participates in the WxChallenge National Forecasting Competition. The WxChallenge brings together schools from around the country for a little friendly competition. UNC Asheville has participated in the WxChallenge since 2007. Forecast teams consist of undergraduate and graduate students, faculty/staff, and alumni. Scores are compiled based on forecast performance and awards are given out in numerous categories. There are usually 5 forecast cities each semester.

During the 2008-2009 season, UNCA took part in the first "Tobacco Cup", a competition between North Carolina meteorology schools (UNCA, NC State, UNC Charlotte, Eastern Carolina). We finished a distant third but hopes are high for the coming seasons.

If you are interested in participating, there are two sign up periods. The first period begins when the semester starts in the fall and lasts until mid-September. The second period begins after winter break. All sign ups occur through the local manager, which happens to be me. Please contact me or download, fill out, and send me the sign up form. The cost to participate is $3/semester or $5/year. This covers administrative costs and trophies.
